Our Ancestors want us to be Motherwort because they want us to hold and be held while we do hard shit. They want us to grow in disturbed areas and ignored city lots. They want us to pop our little heads up through piles of waste and say “what can be done here?” They want us to be ubiquitous “weeds” that can’t be ignored.
Motherwort is a soother of hearts and nervous systems. It teaches us to trust ourselves and the processes we are enveloped in.
Motherwort has the ease and presence of a being who knows just how powerful they are. It is a medicine that sits with us through overwhelm and asks us to do the same: just sit with it.
This plant allows dichotomies to coexist. Many truths can be true. Many truths make a whole. Motherwort can support us as we open our hearts and hold us as we face the heartbreak of living with that open heart. It expands our capacity to look after ourselves while looking after others.
It is the plant-version of a deep exhale as you sink into the bathtub or the rise and fall of a beloved’s chest.
Our Ancestors want us to be Motherwort because they want us bound up in each other. They want us to be vessels that overfloweth. They want us resolute in our softness and our capacity to imagine and build.
That’s so sweet. Thank you for sharing.
